It looks like the Ubuntu Kernel team is back at work after taking a short break, and they recently published another installation of their bi-weekly newsletter to inform the Ubuntu Linux community about what to expect in the coming weeks.
Now that the upcoming Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) operating system is open for development and daily build ISO images are already available for download, it's time to have a look under the hood and see what to expect from the Ubuntu Kernel team.
Long story short, as expected, the first Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) daily builds are based on the repositories of the current stable release of the popular OS, namely Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus), which means that they're shipping with the Linux 4.10 kernel series.
Ubuntu 17.10 to be powered by Linux kernel 4.11
As such, the Ubuntu Kernel team have announced that they started working on rebasing the kernel packages of Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) on the soon-to-be-released Linux 4.11 kernel, which is hitting the streets in only two days from the moment of writing this article.
"The archive is now officially open for the 17.10 Ubuntu release, aka Artful Aardvark. For now we have pocket copied the 4.10 based kernel forward to open Artful. We are working on rebasing to v4.11 and will look to get that uploaded for testing soon," reads the latest newsletter from Ubuntu Kernel Team.
That being said, early adopters can start preparing a separate partition for installing Ubuntu 17.10 if they want to test drive the new Linux 4.11 kernel, which will land in Artful Aardvark's repos in about two weeks, around May 15, 2017. We'll keep you updated in this regard as more information becomes available. Ubuntu 17.10 is slated for release on October 19, 2017.
